On 5 June, a delegation from the Audit Committee of the German Parliament (Bundestag) visited the National Audit Office. The management and experts of the National Audit Office who attended the meeting – Auditor General Irena Segalovičienė, Deputy Auditors General Živilė Kindurytė and Audrius Misevičius, Adviser Aurimas Miškinis, and department heads Vilma Maslauskienė, Mindaugas Šalčius, Laura Stračinskienė and Lina Nuobarienė – discussed with their foreign colleagues the role of audit institutions in strengthening public finance management, challenges to national security and the importance of parliamentary oversight.
“Cooperation between Lithuanian and German institutions has become increasingly close in recent years and is taking on new strategic significance. In January this year, we hosted colleagues from the German Supreme Audit Institution (SAI). On that occasion, we focused heavily on defence audit issues, visiting the Rūdninkai training area and the German Brigade Headquarters in Lithuania. Given the current geopolitical situation, active dialogue between our institutions contributes to greater transparency in the use of public funds and helps to strengthen public trust. We value the opportunity to exchange experiences not only in the field of audit methods, but also in the areas of parliamentary oversight, public finance supervision and the assessment of the efficiency of defence spending. Meetings such as today’s strengthen institutional ties between both countries and lay the foundations for a long-term partnership,” said Auditor General Irena Segalovičienė, emphasising the significance of the visit.
One of the key topics of discussion during the visit was the models of cooperation between SAIs and parliaments, which ensure that audits have a tangible impact and help combat corruption.
During the meeting, the Auditor General emphasised that the Seimas of the Republic of Lithuania is one of the most important partners of the National Audit Office, helping to ensure that audit findings and recommendations translate into tangible changes in the public sector. It is precisely through the work of committees and commissions, parliamentary oversight and consistent monitoring of the implementation of recommendations that the Seimas helps to strengthen the impact of audits and makes a significant contribution to the responsible management of state resources.
